Caffeine and miscarriages

Study: 4 coffees a day reduce fertility by 26%

Drinking four cups of coffee a day can reduce a woman's chance of having a baby by 26%, a study has suggested.

The research has claimed that this amount of caffeine can be equally as damaging to pregnancy as obesity, alcohol or smoking.

The researchers, from Radbout University in Nijmegan, revealed their findings at the European Society of human Reproduction and Embryology's annual conference in Barcelona.

Drinking four coffees a day was found to have the same effect as having three or more alcoholic drinks a week.

Earlier this year, it was claimed that drinking two cups of coffee a day could double a woman's chance of miscarrying.

Dr De-Kun Li, head of the research team at Kaiser Permanente in Oakland, California, advised: "If women become pregnant or are actively planning to become pregnant they should probably think about stopping drinking caffeine, at least during the first trimester when most miscarriages occur."
