Will we see a ripple effect in fertility funding in British Columbia after the recent proposal of legislation in the U.S.?

Last week, RESOLVE, the national infertility association in America, and the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) joined together to hold a public rally for support of infertility awareness in Washington DC. At this event, representative Rosa DeLauro (Connecticut) and Senator Cory Booker (New Jersey) introduced the Access to Infertility Treatment and Care Act, which will require health insurance coverage for the treatment of infertility. This announcement was met with high praise from both ASRM and RESOLVE. The Act will enable more individuals affected by infertility to get the care and treatments that may be  required to have a family.

I will be curious to see what ripple effect this may have here in Canada and if we will see more provincial support for fertility treatments, especially in British Columbia where it is not yet funded. Currently, there are four provinces that have funding (New Brunswick, Ontario, Quebec and Manitoba). The extent of the coverage varies by province and also in how the funds are allocated.

In the case of fertility preservation funding, we do have a national non-profit organization called Fertile Future. They provide information and support services to cancer patients that choose to undergo fertility preservation methods prior to cancer treatments that could affect their chances of conceiving.
