Men’s Reproductive Health

Approximately 40% of infertility is due to male fertility problems. At Elements of Health Centre, we have experience and expertise in treating men’s health concerns. We take a comprehensive approach and work to improve your overall health as well as to address any fertility issues.

Sperm production and maturation takes approximately three months, during which time the sperm are susceptible to many factors that can alter their shape and structure. These alterations may affect how well the sperm swim and their ability to penetrate the outer lining of the egg.

In addition to the physical attributes of the sperm, the DNA within the sperm is also vulnerable to damage. Every time a cell divides the DNA is copied so that each cell replicated is identical to that “parent cell”. The more times a cell divides and replicates, the greater the chances are for an error to occur (mutation).

As men age, the number of mutations that affect fertility and pregnancy and can potentially impact the health of offspring increases dramatically. These mutations can affect the sperm’s ability to fertilize the egg, as well as the development of the embryo. This can result in an increased risk of complications during pregnancy, such as miscarriage, smaller birth weight, and cleft palate. In addition, changes may manifest later in life in conditions such as mental health disorders, academic and learning difficulties, or fertility challenges for the offspring.

Treatment

The good news is that these negative changes can be reduced and prevented. Your individual pre-conception treatment program may positively influence epigenetic changes within the sperm to improve the chances of conception as well as the viability of a pregnancy and the health of your child.

Sexual disfunction

Getting and maintaining an erection, as well as the ability to ejaculate, are complex physiological reactions that involve the precise coordination of muscles, nerves, vessels, hormones and body fluids. Usually sexual dysfunction involves both emotional and physical symptoms.

Treatment

At EOHC we create an individual treatment plan that includes stress management, lifestyle changes, supplements, acupuncture, and herbal treatment.
Acupuncture has been shown to effectively treat sexual dysfunction by addressing both the physical and emotional conditions that are underlying the condition.

Acupuncture can

  • Increase blood flow by dilating the blood vessels within and leading to the penis
  • Relaxing surrounding muscles that may be constricting blood flow into the penis
  • Reducing the effects of stress by regulating autonomic response and providing overall relaxation

Chinese herbal medicine and dietary suggestions are often combined with acupuncture treatments to further promote blood flow, improve hormone communication, generate body fluids, and address other physical, emotional or mental health issues that may be affecting sexual function.
